The Helichrysum is a perennial plant with a bushy habit belonging to the Asteraceae family. From the plant, an essential oil (containing nerol, neril acetate, neril propionate, neril butyrate, neril isovalerate, dimethyl eptenone, dimethyl octenone, α and β-pinene, geraniol, linalool, eugenol, isovaleraldehyde) is extracted through steam distillation. In addition, it contains Flavonoids, caffeic acid; Triterpenoids, phytosterols; Phthalides, elipirone, floroglycinol derivatives, and geraniol derivatives, which have antihistaminic, febrifuge, anticatarrhal, antirheumatic, and antineuralgic properties.

Helichrysum is indicated for allergic asthma, cough, catarrhal bronchitis, and acute rheumatism. The contained flavonoids have an anti-radical action, reducing connective tissue inflammations, autoimmune and allergic reactions. It acts by reducing inflammatory processes related to respiratory and food allergies.

For internal use: the flowers are used as a sudorific in flu states, catarrhal conditions, sinusitis, and cough. For external use: the flowers in infusion, 100 grams per liter of water, are used for eye washes (conjunctivitis, styes, and all eyelid inflammations), compresses, and nasal washes in case of cold and sinusitis, and for various skin problems (eczema, scaly dermatitis, psoriasis).
