Olive Grove of the Fortress

The "Oliveto della Rocca," recently acquired by the Municipality of Narni, has been left uncultivated for several years and affected by a fire, resulting in the loss of its former landscape and productive characteristics as an olive grove. The current project aims to restore the landscape and agricultural aspects of the olive grove by pruning and reviving the olive trees and the overall landscape design. To preserve and enhance the natural character of the site, developed during the years of abandonment, and strengthen its role as an ecological corridor within the landscape unit with a regulatory function on a larger scale in the cultivation intervention, a diverse shrub border will be left along the perimeter, creating an ecological corridor and reconnection with the surrounding natural systems.

The area includes olive cultivation, now classified as an olive grove of Class 3, pasture of Class 2, and wooded pasture. In the past, this olive grove played an essential agricultural role, strategically located near the inhabited center and having excellent agronomic exposure, making it a significant food source. However, with the abandonment of production and care for the plants, and especially due to the numerous fires that affected the grove over the years, it lost its agricultural and landscape value, which was once portrayed in various artistic works.

The Municipality of Narni plans to intervene by cleaning the area through mowing the undergrowth between the plants to control the growth of spontaneous shrubs and plants. They will then proceed with training pruning to restore the characteristic shape of the olive trees and subsequent maintenance pruning to give the grove an aesthetically pleasing landscape value. Additionally, the area contains Maple and other forest plants that suffered damage to the crown after a fire and will require remedial and training pruning to recover their ornamental and functional appearance.

Furthermore, a rest area adjacent to the entrance road will be equipped with a rack for parking and recharging electric bikes, which can be rented by tourists for excursions. This sustainable mobility system not only offers an additional service to visitors but also allows them to explore the territory or the historic center by electric-assisted bicycle or recharge their own bikes during an intermediate stop in their exploration of the area.
