Pennyroyal Mint, often also known as Roman Mint, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Like all species in the family, it emits a characteristic and highly intense aromatic scent. Among the various mint varieties, the Roman Mint is one of the smallest: its bush reaches a maximum height of 40 cm, and its greenish-gray leaves, entirely covered with a fine hair from which essential oil is extracted, are about a couple of centimeters long; the stems are upright, and the small violet flowers, which bloom in summer, gather in inflorescences at the end of the stems. Pennyroyal Mint finds wide use both in culinary applications and in herbal medicine; its scent is extremely pleasant but strong, so much so that in ancient times, it was employed to repel fleas, hence its name Mentha pulegium (from Latin "pulex" = flea).
